3 cardamom pods
3 cloves
1 1/2 inch piece ginger
1 3×1 piece of orange peel
1 cinnamon stick
1 bottle medium bodied dry red wine
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup blanched almonds
1/4 cup vodka or aquavit

Place cardamom pods into a a plastic bag and crush them slightly with a rolling pin.
Put cardamom, cloves, ginger, orange peel, cinnamon stick, and wine into a non-reactive container. Stir, cover, and set in a cool place overnight.
Strain wine into a 2-quart saucepan and stir in sugar. Bring to simmer and stir in almonds and vodka or aquavit.
Serve hot.
