Dal in Yogurt Sauce

3 tablespoons oil or ghee
4 meidum onions, minced
8 clove garlic, sliced
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne
2 teaspoons coriander
1 1/4 cup hot water, divided
1 cup split mung beans, soaked 2 hours
1 cup split yellow peas, soaked 2 hours
4 cups yogurt, divided
salt to taste
2 teaspoons garam masala

Heat oil and fry onions and garlic until golden. Add turmeric, cayenne, and coriander plus 1/4 cup of hot water and cook until it bubbles.

Drain beans and peas and add to wok along with 2 cups yogurt. Cook 10 minutes at medium heat. Add salt and remaining cup of hot water. Cook again until legumes are tender.

Add salt and remaining yogurt and simmer 10 minutes more. Remove from heat, add garam masala, and stir.
