Spiced Wine

1 bottle dry red wine
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup gin or vodka
1/3 cup sugar
Peel from 1 orange
6 whole cloves
2 cardamom pods, opened

Stir together wine, raisins, gin or vodka and sugar in large saucepan
cut a double thickness of cheesecloth into a 6-8 inch square, place orange peel, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom in the center of the cheesecloth, tie into a sachet and add to wine mixture
Heat mixture to simmering – do not boil! – and simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes
Remove spice bag.
